Cleethorpes Academy students and staff have raised £1,134.30 for the Ukraine Disaster Fund.

The students all paid at least £1 to wear their own clothes in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, and staff created badges, flags and ribbons in support of the country and its people, who are in the midst of a war with Russia.

Janice Hornby, Principal of the Academy, said a whole school assembly led by the Head of History had given students a factual account of the background to the conflict, and also an insight into the Ukraine’s geographical location in the world.

“We felt that everyone was talking about the conflict and the children were seeing it on the news and social media and it was definitely making some students anxious,” said Mrs Hornby.

“The assembly was very well received by the students, who said they felt it helped them to better understand what is going on and put their minds at rest on a number of issues relating to the conflict.

Year 8 student Leienna-Mae Webster said watching the accounts of the war on TV made her feel ‘very privileged’ to be living in the UK. Gracie Barnard (Year 11) said: “It is awful to see children like us suffering through no fault of their own.”

Mrs Hornby added: “Our students and staff wanted to show their solidarity for the people of Ukraine and have been very generous in donating to this appeal. Staff have made badges and flags and our cleaner Alison Towns has even dressed her cleaning cart with the colours of the Ukraine in support. My thanks go to everyone involved in the fundraising.”
